Becoming a mentor for the Prison Outreach program involves a one year commitment. 1-2 inmate visits, six months of corrispondence and minimum of six months follow up to ensure a smoother transition back into society. Here's an idea how this program works. A rather simple soulution really, each inmate before thier outdate (this is the date of thier release) is required to penpal back and forth for six months prior to release. This allows for the mentor and staff to get to get familiar with each other. During this time, every mentor will visit one or two times. (Mentor visits not available in all counties)
Upon release date he/she will be picked up from a destination prieviously arranged, by thier mentor and a staff member of GDP Ministries. All accomidations will be arranged/approved by GDP Ministries. Clothing and food will be provided if necessary. Daily meetings and phone calls will take place for the first 30 days manditory.
Durning the first month of release a transition back into employment or financial stability goal is set.
The first three months of release are more of a one on one and group enviornment setting. During the final 4th through 6th month, volunteeer hours are fulfilled and long term goals are established.
A manditory face to face interview is necessary before becoming a mentor. This is not a contract but a commitment to helping our society in making a positive change.
It costs nothing to give a smile, make a kind gesture, or just give a minute of your time to another in need. Everyone has something to give, holding an elevator door open, helping another cross the street, returning a lost item or taking the time to write or visit another in need.
